Broadband Breakthrough Initiative

Vermilion Advantage is happy to announce it has partnered with several community and government leaders, and organizations to lead a program designed to advocate for federal funds for reliable, speedy internet throughout the County, and particularly the more rural areas in the unincorporated areas of the County. Improved broadband internet access is vital for economic development, education, public safety, and all aspects of County development forward. The State of Illinois has one million dollars to spread out for underserved areas of the State.

Vermilion County is underserved and should position itself to receive funds to enhance this vital service. The steps we are taking now will enhance the County’s position to take advantage of this program.

The program we have joined is the Illinois Broadband Breakthrough program through the University of Illinois Extension Service, the Soybean Association, Benton Institute for Broadband & Society, and others. We meet weekly to advance the County’s need for this vital infrastructure.

Local leaders, governments, and community organizations include the Farm Bureau, DACC, Vermilion County, the Superintendent of Vermilion County Schools, the Vermilion County Sheriff’s Department and 911, and other volunteers.

We are committed to advancing this vital economic cause and will be continuously recruiting people to help us. Our greatest need right now is for volunteers to help us conduct a survey throughout the County. A commitment to community service, improved quality of life, common sense, and practical life experience are required! Groups and organizations looking to assist in growing a reliable broadband system in the County, please join us.

We are asking people throughout the County to take the internet access survey through the link provided below and to encourage their friends and families to take the survey as well. The survey will help us create a solid map of where we lack reliable and affordable internet access. That map and the data derived from the survey will be used to apply for funds to build an affordable, reliable broadband system throughout Vermilion County.

Here is the online survey: https://go.illinois.edu/ConnectVermilion

Vermilion Advantage realizes how important it is for the local economy to keep retail sales dollars local. In an effort to address some of the high leakage dollars to other communities and to raise consumer awareness of products produced and made right here at home, an initiative called “Think Vermilion County First” was created in 2002. The overall message of the initiative is to support local businesses by spending dollars locally.

Why Spend Locally?

It encourages support of local businesses and keeps dollars circulating. Studies show that a dollar spent at a locally owned store is usually spent 6 to 15 times before it leaves the community.

  • It encourages local investment and growth. As the local economy strengthens and flourishes, that economy attracts more business.
  • It adds to our community’s tax base. These taxes help provide local services, roads, as well as fire and police protection.
  • It creates jobs. Small, local businesses are the largest employer nationally.
  • It helps sustain our one-of-a-kind businesses. These are an integral part of our distinctive character.
  • You live, work, eat, educate, have fun and raise your family here.
