The Director of Music Ministries will be a role model as a servant of God, demonstrating a strong faith and commitment to Jesus Christ, feeling called to be a faithful disciple as the primary administrator of all music ministries at St. James United Methodist Church. This position is responsible for planning, organizing, conducting, and evaluating all activities of a comprehensive music ministry to help develop disciples of Jesus Christ according to the doctrine of the United Methodist Church. The Director of Music Ministries will incorporate a variety of music styles, including elements of both contemporary and traditional Christian music, facilitating both artistic and technical elements of worship that glorify God.
• Collaborates with Pastor(s), Passionate Worship Team, musicians, other staff, and volunteers to create plans for meaningful, passionate worship experiences and ensuring musical selections compliment and uplift the worship theme and lectionary.
• Directs, organizes, and recruits for all music groups, including choir, orchestra, bell choir, Contemporary Worship Praise Band, special soloists and instrumentalists, and any other musical groups.
• With guidance and support from the Passionate Worship Team, Church Council, and Lead Pastor, remains open-minded and flexible regarding worship and music styles to grow and pivot to meet any changing needs of the church.
• With guidance from the Finance and Passionate Worship Teams, manages the music ministry budget and maintains and updates the church music library, music equipment/instruments, and other music ministry supplies, and arranges for repairs and tuning when necessary.
• With assistance from the Passionate Worship Team, recruits volunteers for all music groups and other lay positions as needed.
• When needed and upon request, organizes fundraising efforts for the music ministry and provides budget proposals.
• Along with the Passionate Worship Team, coordinates the Haworth Concerts and other concerts, within the allocated budget
• Attends staff meetings, Passionate Worship Team meetings, Church Council, and other meetings as directed by the Lead Pastor.
• Offers guidance for paid staff or volunteers who manage elements of production, including the sound system, cameras, radio program, and social media.
• Promotes a healthy work environment, fostering effective communication, professionalism, and positive interpersonal skills amongst staff and supporting all other church ministries.
• Conducts all activities through a Christ-centered lens and compassionate spirit.
• Bachelor’s degree in music or related field and at least 2 years experience organizing and directing music groups is preferred.
• Or at least 5 years experience directing and organizing music groups (in lieu of a music or related degree)
• Previous experience leading church ministries is a plus.
• Demonstrates good time management, leadership, and organizational skills and possesses excellent written and oral communication skills.
• Exhibits strong faith in Jesus Christ and dedication to the ministries and doctrine of the United Methodist Church.
• Effective communicator and strong interpersonal skills are a must.
• Displays eagerness to integrate into the St. James Congregation as well as the community (Vermilion County and surrounding areas).
• Demonstrates a clear understanding of church ministry and possesses the capacity to effectively navigate the challenges that often accompany church ministry.
